The second Dogcember event was held on 4th December 2011 on the grass square beside The Barracks Vet Surgery. First, second and third prizes for best costume were all pet friendly weekends away at holiday spots near Byron Bay. And for the second year in a row, first place was won by Susie Braithewaite, a yellow Labrador in a “Superdog” outfit. There were many great runners-up who received gift vouchers from Pet Stock. The whole day was beautifully arranged with well over 20 stalls and activities to choose from. The two MCs, Brittany Bloomer (Minnie Mouse) and Rachel Chesham (Dorothy from the Wizard of Oz) kept up the pace as they popped random interviews and joined in the contagious zumba performance.
Simon Bryant from the ABC’s “The Cook and the Chef” was happy to chat to hungry customers lining up for his famous hand made lentil burgers with a delicious tahini, yoghurt and cumin sauce. Lots of other stalls provided food too, with slushies, popcorn, gelato, drinks and free range chorizos going fast. The cake stall was overflowing with irresistable treats thanks to the generosity of our friendly pet owners cooking their hearts out.
Event Management students from ICMS College kept things in order and organised all the children’s activities. Kids signed up for a tug of war, sack races, pick pocket tag, a 3 legged race, blind snakes and more. Entry was free, and lolly bags plentiful. The jumping castle, live musicians, professional facepainters, characters in fancy dress and a cool graffiti artist kept everyone amused.
Alas the weather was one thing we couldn’t quite command, and a whopping great thunderstorm came through half way through the event. Good on everyone for being good sports and carrying on.
A day like this takes many willing hands and the spirit of kindness towards the great work of the Animals Asia Foundation.
